Inc. 5000 applauds Precision Laser Services as a fastest-growing U.S. company

Ed Ferrier, CEO of Precision LaserPrecision Laser Services, a leading contract manufacturer in northwest Fort Wayne, is one of the nation’s fastest-growing private companies, says Inc. magazine. In its 2009 ranking, Inc. 5000 praises Precision Laser Services for its exceptional four-year revenue growth and entrepreneurial skills.

“Inc. recognizes the creativity, dedication and hard work that have gone into building Precision Laser Services into what it is today,” said Jane Berentson, editor of the 712,961-circulation magazine that annually commends entrepreneurial leadership.

“This is validation that the team we’ve built at Precision Laser Services is providing for its customers and is a success,” said Ed Ferrier, CEO and general manager of the 30-employee company. “To be recognized as one of the fastest-growing companies is quite an honor.”

Products manufactured by Precision Laser Services range from food service equipment and RV equipment to heavy duty truck parts and military weapon systems components. The company offers state-of-the-art machining, turning, stamping, fabrication and parts assembly in its 30,000-square-foot facility at 14730 Lima Road in Huntertown.

Diversity – in services and customer base – has served Precision Laser Services well, even during recession. “We’re going to continue to grow,” said Ferrier, who purchased the 68-year-old company from his father in 1995. “We’ll continue to add capability and capacity.” Three years ago, Precision Laser saw the need to add machining to its capabilities, fortifying its transportation and industrial product base. “It’s a key area we decided to bring in-house, to gain more control” said Ferrier.

Ed Ferrier, with a degree in business administration, enjoys the problem-solving aspects of the job – especially if Precision Laser Services can deliver solutions using its own talent and machinery. Rather than providing customers a partially completed part that must be sent to another contractor for further processing, why not produce the whole, combined unit, assembly-line ready? “We’re solving their problem, all in one place,” said Ferrier.

“That service really is what has spurred our growth. The machining, stamping, welding and fabrication are symbiotic, they all complement each other. And because we control it all, it’s faster, it’s less expensive, and we can be more responsive to our customer’s schedules,” Ferrier said.

Innovation marks the company throughout its history, from its founding in the 1940s as a wire drawing die shop to the purchase of its first laser in 1972, and today, with the blending of machining and laser technology. “Precision Laser Services will continue to provide innovative solutions for its customers,” said Ferrier.
